Lessons from Times Square Car Bomb Attack

The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the May 1st failed car bomb attack in NYC Times Square, the busiest urban spot in the world.

The car bomb was discovered on Saturday evening after a street vendor spotted smoke coming from a Nissan Pathfinder SUV. Fortunately the street vendor, a Vietnam war vetran had good instincts about smoke and bombs, called 911. The bomb squad despatched to the scene discovered a crude bomb made of propane tanks, petrol, consumer grade fireworks and two clocks with batteries.

In a video released to the media, the Pakistan Taliban or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, claimed that the attack is revenge for the death of its leader Baitullah Mehsud and the recent killings of the top leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq like Abu Hamza al-Baghdadi and Abu Ayyub al-Masri.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani American who carried out the New York attack, was trained by the militant group in the Mohmand region in Pakistan’s tribal belt and received $15,000 to carry out the attack.  He was arrested at the JFK Airport, just in time while making good his escape, having boarded an Emirates flight.

Now I’m no terrorism expert but few things struck me about the whole incident which should be lessons for the CIA and Obama Administration.

Firstly, Pakistan Taliban as an organisation, even to this day, can raise funds in USA and have assets in the country. Its members too can freely enter US. Why are we have to fighting a 65 billion war for Afghanistan (war cost overtaking that of Iraq) while still funding terror organisations. To top it all in ‘partnership’ with Pakistan, the country which according to your own Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the hotbed of terrorism.  Pakistan throughout history has nurtured the Taliban and protected it even when it pretended, under American pressure, to be fighting it.

Secondly, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has boldly claimed responsibility for the attack. Does it make you scarier as a terror organisation when you claim responsibility for something that failed? Is the Pakistan Taliban still playing on American paranoia and obsession to fight the War on Global Terror that it even claims responsibility for a failed bombing?

A little forsight could have saved lot of trouble for the Obama Administration. The Administration should have let poor Faisal Sahzad slip out of the country, instead of arresting him, to perhaps a ‘hero’s welcome’ in Pakistan. Reports in media suggested that Faisal apparently was not the brightest. On the day of the attack, he left the keys to the getaway car and the key to his apartment in the SUV with the bomb in it. Maybe we should have just let him out to join the Taliban and he could destroy them from within…… Commonsensical Right?

Liked your approach of killing Taliban from within. Feel lucky to get this tip from you 😉

    Love it…. lol….

In December, the police closed Times Square for nearly two hours as they investigated a suspiciously parked van, delaying the rehearsal of the New Year’s ball drop. However, the van turned out to contain nothing but clothing.

If gasoline and propane is the best that any would-be terrorist can come up with now – particularly given that including Umarpants’ holiday flight to Detroit in December this is the second failed bomb attempt – I think it’s fair to say that inept amateurs and crackpots are the only ones left to cause any trouble this summer. Woot.

Pakistan is Taliban’s Godfather. Every body in US knows but preferes looks the otherway because of the war in Afghanistan.

Who is really the boss anyway – Pakistan or the United States? Maybe some of those laws on the books from the Patriot Act need to be used against the Pakis operating in and around the United States, as well as its religious leaders, “charitable organizations”, army and political figures. These guys are just as “un-American” as any Al Qaeda terrorist, they just have better lobbying power, blackmailing power, and way more politicians sucking American dick for cash.

I don’t generally reply to content but I sure will in this case. Truly a big thumbs up for this one.

I agree with MissionImpossible on Pakistan’s culpability. There is no doubt Afghan militants are supported from Pakistan soil. While Musharraf has earlier admitted the Taliban was being sheltered in the lawless frontier border regions of Pakistan, it is common knowledge that the Taliban is directly funded, armed and advised by Islamabad itself.

An IED is simply an “improvised explosive device”. It can be made with anything combustable, and is not limited to military grade explosives. The 1996 Olympic bombing in Atlanta was simple dynamite and nails, and there have been examples of smaller pipe bombs made with ingredients readily available to the public (remember the Unabomber anyone?). I’ve been afraid for a long time that the next terror attack won’t be anything more sophisticated than a van full of gas-cans (which you can buy at any hardware store and fill up at any gas station) and driven into a crowded building to set it afire.

Police in New York are investigating whether a car bomb in Times Square was targeted at the makers of South Park over a controversial depiction of the Prophet Mohammed.

Awesome post, it’s been a long-time since I’ve been on here. I see that nobody has lost their passion. Good to be back.

US Administration has designated the Pakistani Taliban, linked to this botched bombing as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Little too late!!!!!!

It is but obvious that Pakistan govt in the past was giving shelter to all these jihadi groups and still they have sympathy of vast muslim population. The poor citizens of the country are forced to accept their dictum even at the cost of life of their near and dear ones in the name of Jannat. They probably do think why their Mullas and leaders do not accept Jannat but poor uneducated citizenary do not have the strength to question them.

Incredible site I loved reading your information. If these nuts made a bomb because they didn’t like a cartoon then we have major problems. We are going to have to do things that a lot of people won’t like and it will affect our basic human rights but if we want our children, wives, husbands to be safe. It’s going to be a fact of life so we may as well start getting used to it.

Now now little libbie leftists, we know all you non-white, and all you racially guilty self-flagellating white shlubs want to blame Whitey for this and protect Barack Hussein’s islamic friends but let’s hypothesize shall we? Who’s to say this might not be some white Johnny Walker-Lindh type? Y’all remember him right, that leftist white trash berkely al-qaeda wanna-be? Who’s to say this was not a dry run, testing the waters if you will? Who’s to say this might not have been a coordinated drill by the NYPD/Homeland Security to test police response? Don’t any of you “educated” types find it even slightly ironic that there just happened to be 3 cops right nearby; when normally in NYC a cop is rarely around until AFTER a crime has been committed?

This reality flies in the face of the expectation that governments somehow must prevent all terrorist attacks. But the uncomfortable truth in the war against jihadist militants is that there is no such thing as complete security.

How can someone be arrested on time and be discovered that he was planting a bomb. This looks like a big setup just like 9/11.
